Thank you for your interest in my art. Coconut palm frond weaving is an ancient art that has developed in several places around the world. One of those areas was the South Pacific islands, but signs can also be seen in petroglyph form in a Mayan pyramid. One glyph depicts a medicine man clothed only a tortoise shell and a coconut hat. In a book of poetry on the theme of work, versions by Coleman Barks 1991 quoting Rumi a poem from the 13th century "One-Handed Basket Weaving" referring to palm leaf baskets is the earliest weaving reference which I can share. The Caribbean islands have their own history of coconut palm weaving is well personally I have woven in many lovely places. Costa Rica for four years and Hawaii for two years and kEY wEST for several years learning from some of the finest weavers I've had the pleasure to meet. I've woven along side waterfalls along the Hana highway on Maui; and on Oahu at Waikiki, Sunset Beach and Wiamea Bay on the North Shore.
The natural coconut oil in the leaf of the coconut palm keeps its supple and pliable and preserves it in a manner similar to tanned leather. The weave is finished Hawaiian style so it won't unravel. If you ever have one crumble or unravel, I will replace it! I make them personally with love and I only ship my best.
Money back within 30 days for any reason.
Hats left untreated, will become lighter and more comfortable after they have cured. On a hot day, they can be submerged in water and placed on the head for a two hour "watercooled" effect. They can be waterproofed with coconut suntan oil if you prefer. The baskets can be used as vegetable steamers. Food placed in the basket is held above the boiling water, in a covered pot, by the base foundation hoop. They also make excellent fruit ripening and bread baskets. Freezing overnight when green kills all the chlorophyll and bursts open the water cells in the leaf resulting a temporary rich walnut color and less shrinkage as it cures (recommended). If your item has plastic ties, they should be cinched up and the tales clipped off after it has cured. Allow damp leaves to dry in the sun to prevent mildew. Bleach like cotton if necessary.

Hi Terry,
We received the order and are completely satisfied. We had purchased a basket when we were in Key West a few years ago on the sunset pier, but lost it in hurricane Katrina. The ones you sent are just like the one that we lost.
Thank you,

Yes, The baskets are beautiful! My sister, my mother and my mother-n-law loved them!! Was the perfect gift. I loved the way the weave is. I'd like to learn how to do one.. They are starting to turn a grey color now. It's a shame they don't stay that rich green color. If you wanted to keep them that color, is there a product that you can apply that would keep the color? Just curious. .. They are still beautiful!!
Thanks again for your fast service!! I'll definitely will be doing business again!! I have a wedding anniversary coming up and we want to do a luau. I'll need some cute baskets for some things.. I'll be in touch in the near future!!

Fronds are working good. I experimented with 2 of them and started to get
it, the 3rd one came out pretty good, I'm happy with it. The next one
should do ok. The first two I had trouble breaking ribs, etc. and it took a
few times to get the crown part down. Just kept working with it and the
light finally came on. I will e-mail pics. I probably will need to get some
more material. I think it's going to take a few more to get some more
practice. Do I need to just order that from the site? Thanks for all of
your help.

Terry, you can use any of my correspondence or pictures for your web site. I sent you a couple of older pics in my payment envelope. My hoops came wrapped in plastic which made for good packaging and storage. I didn't get a piece of cotton cloth (at least I don't think I got one) in my package. I sat in my backyard yesterday and weaved a hat from the new material. I'm working on making the crown more uniform and not so lopsided. Suggestions? I find if I tighten the leaves at the hoop, the crown has a good shape. I want to make sure that it still will fit well after curing. By the way, thanks for the cricket critter in my last package..pretty cool. Eugene

Hello, yes I got my order, I watched the dvd's and set about making my first basket. The first one I made was perhaps my best. I started over several times. I am happy with the way it turned out. Some of the leaves must have been damaged so my hat has a gap in the weave. My husband loves it just the way it is
I am still awaiting the hat section that Terry promised me from Costa Rica. I hope he sends it soon. I was able to make additional baskets that I changed the patterns on. They didnt turn out quite as nice as my first one. I also made a wine bottle holder that I liked alot. I really enjoy weaving the palms and look forward to trying it again soon.
Thank you, best regards
